The Value of Saying “Yes” (Even When You’re Unsure)

Over the past two days, I’ve had experiences that I wouldn’t have typically signed up for, but they ended up being incredibly valuable.

First, I helped out at my school’s open day, guiding visitors and answering their questions. In the past, I might have felt like this wasn’t the best use of my time, like I was missing out on something more productive. But honestly? I’ve grown to really like school these days, and being part of that experience made me appreciate it even more.

Then, the next day, I performed with my choir at the opening of a massive athletics ground at our school. Singing itself was nothing new for me—I already love it. But staying after? That was the unexpected part. And it turned out to be worth it in ways I didn’t anticipate.

Both moments reminded me that not every opportunity needs to align perfectly with your goals to be valuable. Sometimes, the benefits aren’t academic or career-related—they’re emotional, social, or just a shift in perspective.

I could have spent that time studying, and that would have been a solid choice. But growth isn’t just about working toward one thing—it’s also about stepping into new spaces, connecting with others, and challenging yourself in different ways. And because of these experiences, I know I’ll be more open to saying “yes” in the future.

So here’s my challenge to you: The next time you’re hesitant about an opportunity, even if it doesn’t seem like a perfect fit, give it a chance. You might be surprised at what you gain.

What’s one unexpected experience that changed your perspective? Let’s talk!
