Understanding customer behavior is one of the biggest challenges businesses face, especially in a diverse market like South Africa. From data overload to rapidly changing consumer preferences, companies often struggle to turn insights into actionable strategies.
Mr. Phakamani Ntimbane, Managing Director of Alabaster Group, has spent nearly a decade helping businesses navigate these challenges. Through market research and business consulting, his team has worked with major industries, from banking to retail, to refine strategies that drive real impact.
In this edition of Calculated Conversations, I sat down with Mr. Ntimbane to explore how businesses can make sense of complex data, adapt to diverse customer needs, and leverage emerging trends in market research.
Here’s our conversation:
1. With your extensive experience providing services for both the public and private sectors, what are the common challenges businesses face when trying to understand customer behavior, and how do you address these challenges?
Data Overload
Most businesses collect vast amounts of data through internal databases, community panels, customer surveys, mystery shopping, and face-to-face interviews. However, they struggle to identify which data provides meaningful insights. For example, a retailer analyzing buying patterns may find it difficult to distinguish relevant seasonal trends from irrelevant noise.
Our Solution
We focus on data collection, cleaning, real-time observations, and analyses. In retail, for instance, our predictive analytics can identify purchasing trends, enabling businesses to prepare stock for month-end paydays when customers often shop using social grants. These findings allow us to craft effective strategies tailored to organizational needs.
Inconsistent Customer Preferences
South Africa’s rich diversity means customer preferences vary widely. Urban professionals in Sandton might seek high-tech solutions, while rural communities in KZN prioritize affordability and simplicity. Consumer behavior differs significantly between affluent suburbs, township economies, and rural communities.
Our Tailored Solutions
We adapt our solutions to suit different groups effectively. For example, in the retail sector, tech-savvy app solutions are ideal for urban users, while mobile text-based options cater to less tech-accessible areas. We also analyze regional dynamics to determine where online shopping is feasible and where alternative solutions are needed, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all customers. When collecting data, we recognize that some communities require face-to-face interaction, while others are comfortable responding to online surveys. We understand that demographics play a huge role.
2. As the Managing Director of Alabaster Group, you lead a team providing market research and consulting services across various industries. What do you think sets Alabaster Group apart from others in the industry, and what drives your approach to delivering value for clients?
Alabaster Group stands out by combining deep industry expertise with innovative methodologies to deliver tailored and actionable insights for our clients. We prioritize strong partnerships and collaboration, ensuring our solutions are relevant and impactful. My approach is driven by anticipating opportunities, staying ahead of industry trends, and leveraging cutting-edge technologies to empower clients with informed decisions. At Alabaster Group, we aim to be a trusted partner, celebrating our clients’ successes as shared victories. This dedication defines how we deliver sustainable value every day.
3. How have you seen the role of market research evolve over the years, especially with the rise of digital tools and analytics? What emerging trends do you think businesses should pay attention to?
I think market research has evolved to focus on real-time insights and personalized strategies, driven by digital tools and advanced analytics. The shift towards big data, AI, and social media monitoring has enabled deeper customer understanding. Emerging trends include predictive analytics and AI usage, both of which are reshaping how businesses connect with and serve their audiences effectively. I have also noticed that customers want transparency, protection of their personal information, and clarity on how their data is used.
4. As someone with expertise in project management, what are the key elements that ensure successful collaboration between clients and your team, especially in complex, data-driven projects?
At Alabaster Group, we pride ourselves on setting clear, realistic deadlines and consistently meeting them, unlike Eskom, we don’t have “right now” timelines. This allows us to deliver effectively. We also prioritize respecting local cultures and dynamics, ensuring that scheduling decisions account for critical factors like payday weekends, where we know it would be difficult for participants to cooperate. Additionally, our commitment to simplicity shines through in our reporting; instead of overwhelming clients with lengthy 50-page documents, we deliver concise, actionable slides that even your intern would find easy to understand.
5. In your experience, what are the key qualities of a successful consultant, and how do you ensure you consistently meet client expectations?
A successful consultant combines expertise with authenticity, adaptability, and strong communication skills. Beyond technical knowledge, being genuine and building meaningful connections with clients fosters trust and collaboration. By aligning on objectives, maintaining transparency, and delivering practical solutions, consultants can consistently exceed expectations. Be flexible, if a client prefers discussing things over coffee, so be it. Relax and don’t be too serious all the time. Add some humor, well, that works for me.
6. Over the years, what have been the most rewarding aspects of working in market research and business consulting, both personally and professionally?
The most rewarding aspects of working in market research and business consulting have been seeing our clients successfully implement their ideas and strategies, achieving real success. Personally, I cherish the opportunity to learn something new with every project, especially in our beautiful country. Conducting in-depth interviews reveals fascinating perspectives, people’s unique and thought-provoking views constantly inspire me, fueling my curiosity and growth.
